Column Study, 20 x 30, This is one of the constructive drawing studies I made when I was a student.
Thinking in construction is such a powerful way to think as a painter. I find you need both kinds of thought, optical and conceptual, to make a good picture, at least in my own works!
What are the optical side of things? These would be the visual impression or simply put "what things look like", abstract shapes, value relationships, shadow shapes, etc.
What are the conceptual side of things? Here you would find perspective, anatomy, color theory, geometric form understanding, and construction or building.
Often the more you understand how something works, (the construction of it), the more you can see, (the visual impression). This is why artists study artistic anatomy for painting the figure, it helps them to see more!
