Figure Study with Drapery". Working with cloth is a huge challenge when working from a live model!
Since models get breaks in between their posing, often a 5-minute break every 25 minutes for a 3-hour session, the drapery changes every time they get back into their pose! What to do?!
The key is to focus on the Principle Form, the figure itself, and aim to show that through the drapery. Show the hip, the knee, the form of the leg or the waist.
The Figure will show through the drapery in key places if you know where to look! Studying a bit of how drapery itself works, the folds and patterns, can be helpful as well to help you to see the cloth even better. It helps to work in sections as well and draw that entire section from start to finish of one of the 25-minute sessions.
